Before I started on my research, I had the impression that the term "indie" was just a music genre. I was wrong.
As the word implies, "Indie" is an abbreviation of Independent; a label used to classify business (fashion, magazines, even computer games), music and film industries with the power of commercial independence.
But do you know that Indie is also a subculture?
If you do, well then, good for you! If you don't, now you will!
Fans of the indie culture are often referred to as "indie kids", "scene kids", "hipsters" and, in Australia, they're labelled "coolsies".
These individuals have a penchance for being different and possess distinct satorial styles (see picture on the left ), interest in the arts and everything indie.
Nevertheless, we homo sapiens have different perspectives. In gURL.com, many have debated that being indie means "embracing a noble set of values--namely authenticity, experimentalism, anti-commercialism, DIY" and appreciating the world beyond culture populaire. (I thought that sounds pretty much the same as being an "authentic", do-it-yourself indie kid!) In my opinion, indie could mean anything that is unique and original, brilliantly created with freedom of creativity and with a strange yet fascinating style of its own. Don't you think so?
I guess it's hard to define the true meaning of the word "indie". Whether it's all about "authenticity" and "experimentalism" or the pride in being a true-blue indie lover, uncommon, peculiar and a collector of vintage-and-vinyls, I'll leave that for you to decide.
